Will My Insurance / Health Benefits Cover Your Services?2017-12-30T19:46:49+00:00

I am covered by most health insurance plans that cover the services of a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Psychologist. It is best to call your insurance provider ahead of time and ask the following questions:

  • Do they cover psychotherapy or psychological services?
  • What is the total amount of coverage you are eligible per year (e.g., $300/year)
  • What are the necessary credential requirements of the provider (e.g., a Registered Psychotherapist or a Registered Psychologist)
  • How much is covered per session (e.g., 100%, up to a certain amount, etc.)
  • Is a physician’s referral/note required?
  • University of Guelph student benefit plans may cover up to 80% of the cost with a physician’s referral. Contact your student services to verify.
  • Conestoga College student benefit plans may cover up to 70% of sessions. Contact your student services department to verify.

What Are the Limits to Confidentiality2017-12-30T19:49:06+00:00

All information shared in a counselling session is private and confidential except in the following instances:

  • There is a risk of imminent danger to an identifiable third party or to self.
  • There is suspicion of child abuse or neglect.
  • A disclosure is ordered by a court.
  • There is reasonable belief that a health professional is guilty of sexual abuse.
  • There is reasonable belief that abuse or neglect of residents living in Long-Term Care Facilities or Retirement Homes is taking place.
  • You have agreed to share information with another person (e.g., physician, family member, etc).
How Long and How Frequent Are Counselling Sessions?2017-12-30T19:49:32+00:00

The length of your counselling can be adjusted based on your needs. Generally speaking,

  • Sessions are 60 to 90 minutes in length.
  • Sessions often initially begin on a weekly basis.
  • As you start to feel better it is common to space your sessions out over time (e.g., every two weeks).
  • After reaching your initial counselling goals, we can set up follow-up sessions a month or more apart to help you maintain your changes.
  • We can adjust the frequency of sessions at any time, particularly if you’re struggling and need a session sooner than later.
  • There are no session caps unless we’ve agreed upon a sliding scale.
How Many Session Are Required?2017-12-30T19:50:06+00:00

The number of sessions required depends on the kind of issue you’re struggling with and how you’re experiencing progress in art therapy and counselling. Because this is highly individual, I do not set predetermined limits or expectations on the number of sessions you receive. Research shows that on average,

  • People experience rapid decreases in emotional distress within 3-4 sessions.
  • Significant and lasting improvement is most likely to occur after 8 or more sessions.
  • People can continue to see benefits in longer term counselling particularly for severe depression, addictions, trauma, and personality issues.
