My counselling and psychotherapy services can be paid out-of-pocket or through your health insurance coverage. Therapy is not paid for under OHIP unless delivered by a physician or psychiatrist. Payment is provided via cash, cheque, or e-transfer. Receipts are provided at the end of sessions and can be kept for income tax purposes as psychotherapy can now be claimed as a medical expense.
Many health insurance companies will cover my services (e.g., Greenshield, Sunlife, and others). The easiest way to find out is to call your insurance company directly and ask if your insurance policy covers the services of a Registered Psychotherapist or a Registered Psychologist. Some questions to ask your provider include:
- Are Registered Psychotherapists or only Registered Psychologists covered?
- How much do I have available per year and per session?
- When do my benefits renew (e.g., calendar year?)
Payment is provided at the end of session. You’ll receive a receipt from me that you can submit for reimbursement.
Some health insurance companies will only cover the services of a Registered Psychologist and not a Registered Psychotherapist. In this case, you can still receive coverage when seeing me because I receive supervision from a Registered Psychologist. I would provide you with a receipt from my supervising Psychologist which you would then submit for reimbursement. My hourly rate is higher in this case ($180/hr) (incl HST) because you are receiving the extra supervisory services of the Psychologist.
